NZCOM in Gisborne The local branch of NZCOM represents the interests of both employed and self employed midwives in the district, we work very closely and collegially as a very tight knit group to improve the care of childbearing women in the area. |

Meetings We meet on the last Thursday of the month, 1230 till 1400, with a shared lunch and often invite speakers to meetings when relevant and topical issues arise. An update from the midwife unit manager and midwifery educator is given at these meetings, as well as NZCOM news.
All information is now sent to members in the region by email so that we are all aware of the latest news. For more detailed information about the New Zealand Maternity system including “Section 88” guidance” click here.NZCOM

Education workshops We regularly facilitate educational workshops, including neonatal resuscitation every month, recognising the sick baby and examination of the newborn, diabetes in pregnancy, epidural workshops every 12 months, and we also co-facilitate the Technical Skills Workshops with NZCOM.
We hold monthly education lunchtime sessions on relevant topics and aim to facilitate monthly “skills and drills” training in the delivery unit on such topics as shoulder dystrocia, PPH, maternal collapse etc.
We have in the recent past hosted the National New Zealand Action on Pre-eclampsia (NZAPEC) study day. Two of our Neonatal Nurses have recently gained qualifications to run the Neonatal Life Support course. We will run two full days during 2010.
Further details of any of these workshops are available on request.
Promotional activities We celebrate International Day of the midwife each year. Each year we engage in an imaginative and usually high profile event to help boost public awareness of and celebrate our wonderful profession. Any bright ideas for 2010 are welcome!
Gisborne Hospital was first assessed for and achieved Baby Friendly Hospital Status in 2006 and having recently been audited have had our status renewed for another 3 years!
We continue to support New Graduate midwives on the “Midwifery First Year of Practice” (MFYP) programme. (see NZCOM website for further details of this programme).
We welcome enquiries from experienced midwives, student midwives and new graduates to experience the maternity care in Gisborne, and have often placed student midwifes from the UK for elective placements.
Many social get togetherss are arranged, especially over the summer months.
Every week any interested staff can join the ‘Waiata’ group which meet in the hospital chapel and sings waiata together – this group comprises approximately 50% Maori and 50% pakeha. As well as singing, cultural aspects of the history of the songs and dialect is explained and explored. The waiata group performs at the monthly powhiri for all new staff at TDH and also at any TDH events.
