Gisborne/Tairawhiti District Health
Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sun rise each day. It is situated on the east coast of the North Island, with a population of approximately 45,000. Gisborne is well renowned for its outdoor lifestyle, in respect of its excellent surfing beaches, café culture, arts and crafts, and is the chardonnay capital of New Zealand.
Gisborne maternity unit covers the population around the East Coast from Te Araroa to Morere. There were around 730 births in the maternity unit in 2009, many LMC’s (Lead Maternity Caregivers) also support women choosing to birth at home. The home birth rate is around 6%. The opportunities we have are for both Core Midwives and LMC’s. The Maternity Unit is part of the Maternal Child and Youth Group at Gisborne Hospital.
We’re not saying the work is easy—the reality is that we are dealing with a low socioeconomic population with high health and special cultural needs. In Gisborne we have a great team and it is all about supporting one-another. If you’re up for a challenge, and want to develop your skills, Gisborne is the place for you!
